Back in November I exhibited my used pushchair business ikuldeb (ikuldeb.co.uk) at a baby event. It wasn’t the best event I had been to, but it left me thinking what if this was done and what if that was done, it would have been much better, so my husband said to me “why don’t you organise an event?”. At the time I thought I couldn’t possibly organise something like that, but then as time passed I realised I am actually quite good at organising and delegating and I cope relatively well under pressure. In January I decided to take the plunge and organise my first event – Cheshire Baby & Children’s Fair’s due date was announced… Saturday 16th April!

The following months were very exciting – I was now an event organiser for my own nearly new sale and baby show! it wasn’t long before I was turning people away because we already had similar traders and I had to make adjustments to my table plan to make room for more trade tables. My highlight of organising the event was when we got our RSVP form our special guest Peppa Pig! I called in a local radio show RedShift Radio to tell their listeners about the event and by the weekend before the event all the tables were fully booked.

The day of the event came round so quickly! I arrived at the venue to be confronted with a major hiccup – the tables had not been set out to my plan. With a lot of shuffling and cooperation from the table holders and empty tables being folded by my father and my husband I can honestly say you would never have known because everyones tables and displays looked fantastic! It was then time to open the doors and I was so pleased to see a huge queue going through the entrance foyer and out of the door! The hall was full and the atmosphere was amazing (and I had a beaming smile going from ear to ear)!

We raised just over £83 from donations on the door and the raffle for The Joshua Tree, a local charity who’s aim is to develop a holiday house and support centre in Cheshire, where children with a life threatening illness can go with their families.

The overall experience of organising the event was a positive one, as I now have two more events planned! The next one will be at Northwich Memorial Hall on Saturday 13th August 2011 and the one after that will be at Winsford Lifestyle Centre on Saturday 5th November 2011. I already have lots of ideas and improvements we can implement to make the next event even better and increase the total we raise for our chosen charity.

One Month to Go to the NCT Bump Baby and Beyond Fair

On Thursday 21st April it is officially one month to go until the first ever NCT Bump, Baby and Beyond Fair in Skipton. Our committee (Gaby, Fiona, Hazel, Emma, Fay and Anita) has been meeting for the best part of a year to plan the event and now we only have two meetings left. What started as an idea in Gaby’s head has become the biggest event of its kind in the region with over 80 exhibitors booked in and 2,000 guests forecast to visit.

The Bump, Baby and Beyond Fair, which is organised by and fundraises for NCT, is taking place at Skipton Auction Mart on Saturday 21st May between 10am and 4pm. We have an eclectic combination of exhibitors from clothing manufacturers, to photographers, retailers from as far afield as Cornwall and a host of organisations offering support and advice for families with children aged 0-5 years. There is also a series of informative seminars and some great activities for the little ones to try.

With one month to go, there is still a lot of work left to do. Gaby has worked so hard booking in all the exhibitors, not to mention the activities and seminars and arranging the prize draw with over 50 wonderful prizes, but now we need to make sure that we get the visitors in! As publicity officer for the event, this is where I step in.

As we have a media partner for the event in the form of Northern Life Family magazine we have had two double page advertorials in their excellent magazine which gets given to all local children through their childcare providers. The press release is written and poised to be sent out to local papers and radio stations once the Easter/Royal Wedding furore is over and we have had some great publicity photos taken. Now it is up to a network of NCT volunteers to distribute thousands of flyers and posters across the local area.

We have a dedicated Facebook page and Twitter page and listings on countless websites – not to mention UK Baby Shows where our web analysis tell us a lot of hits on the website have come from. (That’s good to know! Ed)

The two big tasks still left to do before the big day are the floor plan and a rota of volunteers. Having done the seating plan for my wedding, I can remember how tricky that and this is on a much bigger scale! Gaby has spent hours at the auction mart putting together a detailed plan so now all we need to do is fill in where all the exhibitors go!

As for the volunteers, we are using all channels available to us – Twitter, Facebook, email, word of mouth – to get as many people to help throughout the day as possible. We have a huge list of positions to be filled so the next meeting will see us matching up names to jobs.

As for me, I’m just so excited to see the event really happening. I’m so proud of the hard work that the committee has put in and the calibre of exhibitors and sponsors we have attracted. It’s going to be quite a day – wish us luck!
